故事發(fā)生在清末民初，蘇燦（周潤發(fā) 飾）和萬子豪（劉德華 飾）兩家均以開設(shè)武館維生，兩家人相互排擠妒忌，關(guān)系千鈞一發(fā)。然而，蘇燦和萬子豪兩個(gè)小兒天真無邪，反而成為了感情十分要好的摯友。某日，兩人結(jié)識了馬坤（苗僑偉 飾）和蕭玲（米雪 飾），蘇燦和蕭玲一見鐘情，很快就走到了一起?！ √K燦的父親死了，蘇燦被誣陷為兇手而鋃鐺入獄，為了救蘇燦，蕭玲不惜獻(xiàn)出了自己的身體。然而，出獄后的蘇燦卻并沒有領(lǐng)蕭玲的情，反而指責(zé)她不知檢點(diǎn)，水性楊花。之后，蘇燦和馬坤、萬子豪一起來到省城開設(shè)武館，歷經(jīng)艱險(xiǎn)，飽受排擠，在盈盈（陳秀珠 飾）等一干好友的幫助下才站穩(wěn)腳跟。
